Brand Spotlight Interview: Parcel and Journey's Founder, Joanna Steinberg
1. What profession would you take on if you weren’t a designer?
I would love the opportunity to travel around the world to discover and identify new trends in design, so for this reason I think I would choose trend hunting as a career.
2. What made you decide you wanted to be a designer?
Before I started Parcel & Journey I co-founded a nonprofit that worked on craft revival projects in the developing world, and although I am not a designer by trade, I found myself gravitating toward this work. I was focused on trying to elevate and modernize traditional designs so the products that the artisan groups were making would be more appealing to western consumers. One day I decided to sketch my own piece, which became the inspiration for the P&J classic tote.
3. What do you love most about fashion?
I love the creativity and culture surrounding fashion design. I am in ethical fashion, which I love because I am able to help and empower skilled artisans in need of sustainable livelihoods. Being able to positively impact individuals, families and communities is what keeps me going.
4. Who is your style icon?
I love and am inspired by everything Julia Chaplin stands for. My muse for Parcel & Journey is a blogger named Tara Michie (@ladyslider). Blake Lively is a very versatile celebrity with eclectic style.
5. Whats the most inspiring place for you?
I recently spent some time in Tulum, Mexico and found it to be incredibly inspiring. Everything from the spiritual vibe to the eclectic style, and Central American design influences.
6. Do you have a specific research process when you start designing new pieces?
No, I just go with what I feel. I am never short of design ideas. I have a growing list of ideas that I cannot wait to put into production.
7. What’s on the radio when you’re working?
I have a couple of soundcloud and spotify playlists I listen to on repeat. Generally, I love electronic music – it’s extremely energizing. My playlists include everything from FKA Twigs, to Rhye, Kygo, The xx, Rudimental, Paul Kalkbrenner, Little Dragon, astronomyy and Angus & Julia Stone to name a few.
8. What has been the highlight moment of your career so far?
This moment is the highlight of my career. 2015 is going to be a very good year for me, personally, as well as for the P&J brand. I am excited to embark on the journey and see what can be manifested!
